In general, Medicare Part A covers: Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers hospital services, including semi-private rooms, meals, general nursing, drugs as part of their inpatient treatment, and other hospital services and supplies. This includes the care they get in the following facilities:
Acute care hospitals
Critical access hospitals
Inpatient rehabilitation facilities
Long-term care hospitals
Medicare Part A also includes inpatient care as part of a qualifying clinical
research study and inpatient mental health care given in a psychiatric hospital or other hospital. What are their out-of-pocket hospital costs with Medicare Part A?
Days 1 – 60: They must pay the Initial Hospital Deductible
Days 61 – 90: They must pay a daily coinsurance.
Days 91 and beyond: These are considered their Lifetime Reserve Days. They must
pay a daily coinsurance. The maximum number of Lifetime Reserve Days that they can utilize is 60 days during their lifetime.
If a hospital stay extends beyond their lifetime reserve days they will have to
pay all of the costs
